Constructed around 1875, the twin stepwells were originally named as Jamna Sagar Bawdi and Ganga Sagar Bawdi by then Maharani Chandrabhanu Kumari belonging to Chauhan rulers, and it served as a reservoir to fulfil the water needs of the Bundi region. The stepwell's intricate architecture was meant not only facilitating water storage but also providing a respite from the scorching desert sun, making it a vital lifeline for the inhabitants of Bundi.
